A polar city

What is Polar day? What is a Polar night?

This phenomenon of Polar Nights can only be observed in places behind the Arctic Circle, which makes Murmansk even more desirable and attractive for travel.

A polar day strongly attracts nature lovers and travellers from all over the world, and we are happy that this unique phenomenon can be observed in Russia in Murmansk.

Polar Night

What is the Polar Night? It is a period in which the sun does not rise from behind the horizon for more than 24 hours. Polar Night is observed in Murmansk between 2 December and 11 January. That is, in fact, during this period the sun does not rise above the horizon in Murmansk and you will not be able to see it at all. However, this phenomenon does not mean the same degree of darkness throughout the day, because even if the sun doesn’t not rise above the horizon during the day, it can partially illuminate the city from below the horizon (the sun’s rays will be visible), and you will be able to observe the so-called Northern Twilight during this time. The duration of these Nothern Twilight is approximately 5 hours a day, while the rest of the time you will be able to observe a full night.

To admire this unique phenomenon, you should plan your trip from 2 December to 11 January. However, it is also worth noting that between October and April the actual length of the day will also be shorter, with darkness early enough and dawn late enough. This means that even if the dates of your trip do not fall into this particular period of Polar Nights, you will feel a very close condition.

This phenomenon of Polar Nights can only be observed in places behind the Arctic Circle, which makes Murmansk even more desirable and attractive for travel.

Polar day

Polar Day is the exact opposite of Polar Night and means that the sun does not set for more than 24 hours. You will be able to observe this phenomenon in Murmansk between 22 May and 23 July, which is just over two months. The sun will reach its highest point on 21 June, the day of the summer solstice.

During this period, the weather is quite warm and comfortable for walks. You will be able to visit many places and do unforgettable trekking on this beautiful part of the Kola Peninsula.
